What is Madlug?
Madlug C.I.C is a 'for purpose' company that was founded in 2015 by social entrepreneur Dave Linton because no child in care should carry their life in a bin bag.
What is a C.I.C?
A C.I.C (Community Interest Company) is a type of company introduced by the United Kingdom government in 2005 under the Companies (Audit, Investigations and Community Enterprise) Act 2004, designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits and assets for the public good.
Is a C.I.C Asset Locked?
This is an essential feature of all CICs and is designed to make sure that the assets of the CIC are used exclusively for the benefit of the community. Any assets and profits (aside from those distributed in accordance with the rules on dividend capping) must be retained within the CIC and used solely for community benefit. The only bodies to which assets are allowed to be transferred are other “asset-locked bodies” – i.e. those organisations which already have an asset lock. This means that assets may be transferred to charities, or to other CICs.
Is Madlug an eco-conscious company?
As a company, we are responsible with our waste and are currently looking at products that are made out of recycled polyester, e.g. a roll-top bag made from recycled bottles.
What makes Madlug different from other buy one give one brands?
With many social enterprises, you buy a product or service and you support an important cause in the process – but at Madlug, your journey doesn’t end there. When you purchase a bag for your staff and clients, you are helping to spread the message that all children in care deserve value, worth, and dignity. We also aim to do the giving in the areas that people buy our bags. Currently, the majority of our sales come from the UK and Ireland, where there are over 90,000 children in care – many in need of our help.

About Our Bags
Are your bags designed and made in the UK?
Our bags are currently designed and finished in Northern Ireland with the core bag being made in China under fair and ethical working conditions.
Are the bags manufactured ethically?
Yes. Our supplier is firmly committed to offering good value products with industry leading quality standards however they will not let this be at the expense of any individual in the supply chain, nor with unacceptable environmental impact. Their suppliers undergo strict assessment, covering ethical policy, through ability to meet product quality and service standards. Our supplier has established partnerships with a dedicated manufacturing base, thus ensuring consistency of quality and supply. As part of this process they reference against the local laws in the respect of wages, health and safety, welfare and human rights. They do not condone the use of any labour which has been forced or coerced and this includes child labour. Their field based staff carry out full audits to ensure that factories meet, or exceed, applicable local standards. Our Supplier is committed to protecting the quality of the environment through sound environmental practice. They ensure that factories meet or exceed local environmental laws and regulations in an effort to reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of their operations.
Do the bags come with a warranty?
All our bags come with a one-year warranty.
What is covered under warranty?
This warranty covers only manufacturing defects and does not cover any damage caused by misuse (such as transportation of unusual items), neglect, accidents, abrasion, exposure to extreme temperatures, solvents, acids, water, normal wear and tear or transport damage (by airlines, for example).
Incidental and consequential damages are not covered by this warranty, nor are labor charges or damages attributable to work performed by anyone other than Madlug.
Any repair or replacement, covered by our warranty, will be at our expense, including any costs required to return the repaired or replacement Product back to you. If the Product needs replacing but is no longer available, we will substitute your original Product for a comparable Madlug Product.
How do I file a warranty claim?
If you wish to file a warranty claim please get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org and include a copy of your proof of purchase in the email, the name of the product and a description of the problem. At Madlug, we throughly check our backpacks to ensure they meet our high standards. If however, a problem does occur that is caused by a manufacturing defect in the material, or the workmanship, we will in our discretion, fix or replace the product in accordance with the warranty terms and conditions.

Do you offer any other co-branding options besides bags?
Currently we only offer co-branding on a selected range of bags. If you require other products branded do contact us and we can connect you with one of our partners.

How We Give
How do we know that your bags are given to children in care?
Madlug are committed to giving vulnerable children bags to help them make their way with dignity. We will be delivering the bags through giving partners who are already working with looked after children. As we are a CIC our accounts will be made public each year which will show clearly bags sold and bags given.
How do you give the donated bags?
In 2020 alone, we donated over 11,000 pack away bags across the UK and Ireland. These go to social workers in local authorities and foster carers, as well as directly to young people and their families.
Over the past two years, we have also run a campaign to provide backpacks and pack away bags to care leavers at Christmas. So far, over 300 backpacks and pack away bags have been donated in the following areas by doing this: Hackney, Huddersfield and Birmingham. Ellesmere port, South London, and Richmond.
How do you decide where the bags go?
Bags are donated through Madlug Foundation - The registered charity foundation of Madlug C.I.C according to where there is a need for them. The foundation partners with various local authorities largely across the UK and Ireland, seeking out new partnerships through word of mouth.
